Working Girl

…not THAT kind…

I had my first day at BSU for training as a TA (Teaching Assistant). I will be teaching one English 101 class this coming semester and this next week and a half will be my preparation for it. We TAs (all 20 of us) are busy talking learning and discussing the many facets of pedagogy and are also preparing our syllabi and lesson plans. Joy, joy.

Actually, as uncool as it may be, I am really happy about this opportunity. I love school. LOVE IT. Love learning and love teaching. That I can attend and teach 10 minutes via bicycle from my house is an incredible blessing. That I am getting paid to do this is mind-boggling. I am somewhat nervous but also just feeling incredibly blessed.

At risk of irritating stay-at-home mothers everywhere, can I just say? I am so happy to be out of the house finally! I have a week and a half of full-time-ish work followed by a pretty consistent 3-hour-per day schedule.

And at risk of irritating working mothers everwhere, can I just say? I can’t believe I have to be away from my babies ALL DAY. And for more than a WEEK. I missed them today-wouldn’t you…

Dear Mandi, By a very strange coincidence I, brazilgirl, am in the U.S. this year and will be teaching Freshman Writing 103 at a Christian university in Michigan. I am nervous and excited. I believe I'm higher up on the dork scale than you are because I'm 47 and will look ancient to college kids. Still I plan to give it my best shot. Teaching is one of my passions.
