A Long Road Trip and No Reading

Well, not no reading but almost none.

A four day trip from Boise to Modesto and back was crazy but good. My boys were sweet little angels almost the entire trip and thoroughly charmed all their relatives. I was so impressed by how well behaved they were even under difficult and stressful conditions. Twelve hours in the car each way and missed naps and late bedtimes and they still just did great.

I didn’t get to read though. I can normally read in the car but between driving in the dark (we left at 3:30am), fetching bottles and snacks and chatting with my husband I didn’t get more than a few pages read on the way down. We were very busy the whole time we were there too and for some reason I was expected to be sociable! Seriously though, it was lovely to visit with everyone and I guess it’s ok that I didn’t get to read much. I started R.L. Stevenson’s Travels With a Donkey and am feeling a bit annoyed with him. He’s so damn superior to everyone he meets, including the Trappist monks, that I feel like smacking him. I also read about half of That Hideous Strength. I drove most of the way home so no reading for that part of the trip either.

I went and gambled Jared and Colby. Dull. I can’t really enjoy it. Money is just too emotional for me. Or maybe it’s just not having any that is too emotional… Anyway, they seemed to have fun it was nice to go out but I felt more than a little out of place. There was a fun gal at the craps table who was an English/Education BA and she was winning lots of money. I was jealous.

Now I’m home and still a little tired. The boys are happy to be home and having fun playing with their toys but I’m feeling reclusive but with no place to go. I think Marymount is calling my name…
