Day Two Hundred and Eighteen
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad Page: 16o Finished
Sword of Honour Trilogy by Evelyn Waugh page:173
I read Conrad’s whole novel today and was surprised at how little of it I remembered. I’ve only read it once before and that was for a Post-Colonial Lit class back in 2002. anyway, it is startlingly well-written but very bleak. I’ve been mulling over my thoughts and feelings toward Africa for quite awhile now and find novels about it surprisingly difficult to digest. I’ve read Things fall Apart, Black Mischief and now Heart of Darkness and feel very unsure of what to think about colonialism, the current situation, and the ancient history of the continent. I think that is a combination of my own ignorance and the muddle-headedness of America’s foreign aid programs clouding the past issues.
Anyway, in practical advice for the day, before using any kind of movable storage unit, be sure to inquire about weight limits. Especially if you’re planning on moving trillions of books. Like, maybe some companies might have a 10,000 pound weight limit. And maybe you want to move 20,000 books that weigh an average of about a pound apiece. Just something to consider if it ever comes up for you.
