Day One Hundred and Seventy-Seven

Canterbury Tales Chaucer Page: 350

I’m tired and Jared is sitting here telling me all about how he wants to replace the windows in our house. The windows are ever so slightly a bone of contention between us. Not really but just enough to make me roll my eyes a bit when he brings them up. We have Ancient Wood Windows. Ancient Wood Windows that don’t even open. It probably doesn’t matter that they don’t open because where some of the Ancient Wood Windows were replaced decades ago, we have Flimsy Aluminum Windows. You could throw a cat through our house. Really. If Azuzu keeps annoying you Aimee, bring him over and I’ll demonstrate.

Obviously we need new windows right? Nice vacuum sealed, vinyl, sliding, screened windows. Well, they’re expensive and we’ve been struggling to remain cautious as we upgrade our home. It’s old, everything needs to be re-done eventually. Some things are merely aesthetic nightmares (who paints a bathroom beige? not just the walls EVERY SINGLE THING IS BEIGE!) while others (like Ancient Wood Windows) are practical problems. So each time we’ve discussed a project we weigh the pros (nicer home!) and the cons ($$$$) and decide what is to be prioritized. The windows keep losing. But Jared won’t let them go. We have a yard that cost almost as much as windows would but little boys don’t run and play in the window sill. We have a gorgeous loft (that was pure insanity, who remodels while working 70+ hours a week and taking care of two under two?) that cost half as much as windows. So the windows remain Ancient and Wooden and every time Jared brings them up I roll my eyes and say “we don’t have the money!”

I'd take the beige over the sinking tub, fake marble-y wallboard, sky-blue radiator and dark brown carpet we had when we moved into our previous house. We gutted it shortly after we moved in — the day we spotted a mushroom growing out of the carpet at the base of the toilet. ICK! ICK! 'Tis always something with an older house! Good luck with it!
